Retinol is THE superstar of all products, helping to deal with skin issues from wrinkles to pigmentation and acne. If you can only invest in one product – this should be it!
What is Retinol and why should you use it?
Jodie King, skin expert and founder of Blyss Skin Clinic in Sydney gives the low-down on why retinol is such a skin-saver.
Known as the ‘normalising vitamin’, retinol or Vitamin A1 is a real workhorse when it comes to reversing the signs of ageing, acne, lightening pigment and is great as an anti-ageing product.
Retinol works as an antioxidant, protecting the skin from free radicals, increases collagen production, and speeds up cell turnover – which slows down as we age- to even out skin tone, reduce wrinkles and fine lines in the case of acne, unclog pores.
As for the old wives’ tale that retinol thins the skin – it is just that, a tale. Skin improves with the use of Retinols and you can expect a dewy look as a result.
We recommend that retinols are used in the evening only as retinol is degraded by sunlight.
Depending on the strength and formulation of your product, introduce retinol slowly, starting with twice a week to avoid a “retinol response” or irritation while your skin is getting used to the increase in cell turnover.
Retinol products are quite powerful. Higher grade retinol / Retin-A can be given as prescription and is a lot stronger. Lower percentage, over the counter retinol-based products (0.5%-2% concentration) are generally less likely to cause any redness or peeling. And always remember to use an SPF during the day.
Products we recommend are Cosmedix Serum 16 and Environ’s Retinol 1 (see image).
When NOT to use retinol
As with any strong skin care products, you should always consult your GP or skincare professional before using retinol based products. It should not be used on children, during pregnancy or if you have some liver conditions unless prescribed by a doctor.
